As a kid, growing up in Memphis, I took the Mississippi river for granted. Looking for fossils and shiny rocks on the banks, going to concerts on Mud Island, and walking around the scorching hot Memphis in May. The river was a constant backdrop to most things we did. It took almost twenty years for me to realize it was more then a back ground. To realize that it had a greater effect in the air. That it had a greater effect on the culture. That the river was as much an integral part of my life as anything I can remember. That it was a living, moving, influence on everything around me.
